The AB 1769-SDN is a DeviceNet Scanner Module designed by Rockwell Automation for use with their CompactLogix series of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Here’s a quick overview of what this module offers:

AB 1769-SDN CompactLogix DeviceNet Scanner Module

  • Purpose: Allows CompactLogix PLCs to communicate with devices on a DeviceNet network. DeviceNet is a fieldbus network protocol used for industrial automation, allowing devices like sensors, actuators, and other I/O equipment to connect and communicate with a PLC.

  • Features:

    • Communication: Enables communication between the CompactLogix controller and DeviceNet devices.
    • Configuration: Typically configured using Rockwell’s RSNetWorx for DeviceNet software, which helps in setting up the network and mapping the data to the PLC.
    • Diagnostics: Offers diagnostic capabilities to help troubleshoot network issues.
  • Specifications:

    • Power Supply: Powered by the CompactLogix backplane.
    • Network Connection: Connects to DeviceNet networks via a standard DeviceNet connector.
    • Data Exchange: Provides a way to exchange data between the PLC and DeviceNet devices, including support for I/O data, device configuration, and network diagnostics.
  • Installation:

    • Slot Location: Typically installed in one of the available slots in a CompactLogix rack.
    • Connections: Requires proper wiring to the DeviceNet network, including terminating resistors as needed for network stability.
  • Programming and Configuration:

    • Software: Configured using RSNetWorx for DeviceNet, which integrates with Rockwell’s Studio 5000 programming environment.
    • Mapping: You’ll need to map the DeviceNet devices to the PLC’s I/O tags to facilitate data exchange.

Usage Tips:

  1. Ensure Compatibility: Verify that your DeviceNet devices are compatible with the 1769-SDN module and that you have the appropriate software versions.
  2. Network Planning: Properly plan your DeviceNet network to ensure reliable communication. This includes proper cabling, terminations, and power supply considerations.
  3. Configuration: Spend time on configuring and testing the DeviceNet network to ensure that all devices are properly recognized and communicating as expected.
  4. Documentation: Refer to the user manual for detailed instructions on installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
